I just finished Dragon Age: Origins with my first character, a Dwarf Commoner Warrior. Clocked in at 94 hours. Human Noble Rogue is next. :)

Dragon Age Podcast

Episode 21 - We Thought It Would Be A Short One

Our first real episode of the new year turned out much longer than expected, even after some serious cuts were made. Topics include the holidays, Dragon Age 2, tons of other games, and tons of other random things that seem to work their way into conversation. Our feature this time around is an interview with Shodushi, a Dragon Age modder, about his upcoming mod World of Grone. Enjoy.

Been listening to you guys since Tara had her debut and I have to say, despite her absence and idiosyncratic nature, you guys are still going strong. Best thing to see in my RSS feed at work while goblins kill me slowly with paper work and spreadsheets. I've got to admit though, I have to stifle my laughter at times.

On an off note, I just wanted to let Mike know that I finished the Witcher (enhanced version) recently and that after his segment comparing the game with Dragon Age finally convinced me to shell out $20 and buy it on Steam (a month after the Steam sale, wtf. It was $10 then). Taking his comments at hand, I am inclined to agree on some subjects that he mentioned. I'll try to brief; lest I make this longer than an elcor's conversation tree in Mass Effect.

Like Dragon Age, Witcher starts on a smaller scale. However, Dragon Age's quick emphasis on the notion that "YOU, THE GREY WARDEN WILL SAVE US ALL" is a far cry from the Witcher's "Dude, I poach women wild animals." What the Witcher does better though are certain acts in which your decisions have definite consequences and at times framed better than Dragon Age.

Early in the game, you are introduced to a back-water village. You get to know its key citizens by doing all the back-and-forth quests and since its scale is far smaller than a city is, you feel that your decision when the time comes weighs greater significance towards the end, especially when things play out.

Not being a fantasy buff, I can't say this with much authority, but I thought Witcher assimilated material from other pieces of literature better. I would go on to say that there's a strong Salem witch hunt feel in certain quests. I won't use the work 'darker' to describe Witcher however, but I will use 'grittier'. There's a visceral feel to it, but it doesn't come off as 'darker'. My sense of 'darker' would be in the realm of Fallout and the doctor level in Bioshock.

One main gripe I have with the Witcher are the quests. I didn't become a supermutant who can bang numerous women with absolutely no regards to "Surprise!" pregnancies to run across the wild, collecting wolf pelts and brains. Arbitrary things such as the need to read a manual on how to skin a cat/bear/zombie/tentacle monster make it 'realistic', but why can't the quest giver give you a discount or actually tell you how to do it?

To wrap it all up, Witcher isn't too bad a game to play and due to the low cost, worth it. Combat can certainly be the deal breaker, but I didn't have much of an issue with it. Like Dave said, it's pretty amazing that it's the Aurora engine too and despite its age, the graphics are pretty solid.

Hopefully this year will be a great one for Dragon Age and I'll be listening/laughing to this podcast for a long while. Hopefully it relieves me from the crushing prison known as work. Thanks for the great show!
